The UN recently made its LATEST effort to deal with the global crisis, and Eila joins us now from the Naked Newsroom to tell us how they did. SO? Deal or no deal Eila?
Well, it’s not EXACTLY a deal Isabella, but more of a deal to MAKE a deal, and environmental activists are NOT happy! Here’s the scoop! The Convention on Climate Change in Madrid came to an end with an agreement that will see 80 countries bring improved climate plans to NEXT year’s convention. Or, as one climate campaigner put it, they “kicked most of the big issues down the road”. Negotiations actually went two days over schedule, in hopes of getting a REAL deal done, making the result particularly disappointing. Okay, kids, you got your extension; now buckle down and get it done RIGHT!
ALSO in climate change, parts of Australia have been put under a “code red” heat alert. Forecasts are saying that some cities in New South Wales, Queensland, and Victoria are expected to hit nearly a HUNDRED AND FIFTEEN degrees for five consecutive days. And some remote parts of the country could hit up to a hundred and TWENTY-TWO degrees! The sweltering temperatures could also increase the risk of bushfires, the LAST thing the country needs.
And it turns out when we say Google is everywhere, we mean it ninety-eight percent literally! The company recently blogged that Google Earth now features satellite images covering over thirty-six MILLION square miles of the planet, and over ninety-eight percent of the world’s population. Add to that, over ten million miles of Street View, and basically, if it exists, Google’s got it on camera. That’s pretty damn impressive. Don’t go away!
