The European Union is contemplating reopening its external border… but not to everyone. There’s a proposed list of fifteen countries whose citizens would be allowed entry, a list which includes Canada, Japan, Australia… and China, if it’s willing to reciprocate. Not on the list is the United States, where the coronavirus is still spreading rapidly. To be clear: these would be guidelines, and member states control their own borders. But still, I think I hear the Mother Country calling me! Arrivo, Italia!
If Facebook wasn’t worried about the Stop Hate for Profit campaign before, it is now! Companies are being encouraged to pull their ads for at least a month from the social media platform, to make sure it keeps addressing all the hate and misinformation it hosts. And the list of corporations getting on board is growing. Recent additions include Coca-Cola, Ford, and Adidas… and Unilever has pledged it will stop advertising on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter in the U.S. for the rest of the year!
And the popular social media app TikTok has been banned in India… along with fifty-eight other apps made in China! A statement from the Indian government explained the ban stemmed from concerns the apps were “stealing and surreptitiously transmitting users’ data in an unauthorized manner.” This reflects growing tensions between the two nations and is a big blow to TikTok, which has around A HUNDRED AND TWENTY MILLION users in India!
