Especially since science fiction has been promising us flying cars for DECADES! But NOW, it looks like they might ACTUALLY be in sight! Marina Valmont has that story for us right now in Wheels!
The future of WHEELS might actually be PROPELLERS, if one Japanese company has anything to say about it! Skydrive, Inc, is already doing manned test flights of its prototype electric flying car, and are hoping to have it in mass production as soon as 2026! What makes it particularly intriguing is that it’ll reportedly be the world’s SMALLEST flying car – small enough to fit in a typical urban parking space! At eleven feet long, about five and a half feet wide, and about four feet high, it’s a realistic commuter vehicle – that flies!
Skydrive’s flying car will use vertical takeoff and landing technology, like Harrier jets do, without any need for a runway. And with propellers at all four corners, it’d be able to fly at up to sixty miles per hour at about a hundred and fifty feet off the ground.
And the plans aren’t just PIE in the sky. Skydrive was created by former Toyota employees, and has secured millions of dollars in financing. The company’s been doing successful test flights for over a year, and are planning to do full public demonstrations later this year. If all goes well, the first models could go on sale in 2023! Even better, Skydrive says the cool, eco-friendly flying car is set to be priced in the same range as a DRIVING car! Admittedly, no word on whether that’s a Fiesta or a Ferrari, but this COULD become transportation for the masses. So, Futurama is almost here, and I for one couldn’t be more excited about it.
