Hello, everyone, and welcome to Entertainment, Naked News-style! I’m Tia Larose!
And I’m Alana Blaire! Well, now we have a classic Entertainment segment dilemma, because this weekend had TWO thoroughly star-studded events. Which one do we deal with first?
The one with Oscar implications, of course! And that would be the BAFTA Film Awards, which are essentially the British Oscars, and often a good predictor of what’s to come! So, those of you with Oscar pools might want to take a close look at Conclave, which won Best Film and Best Adapted Screenplay. That said, its total haul of four was matched by The Brutalist, which won Best Director and Best Leading Actor – so clearly, we have our front-runners!
We also have to mention the big upset – especially since it was arguably sex-positive! I say “arguably”, because we certainly support Demi Moore’s performance AND nudity in The Substance – but the Leading Actress prize that was expected to go to her, instead went to Mikey Madison for the sex worker comedy Anora. And clearly, the BAFTAs were blown away by her, because Anora also took the award for CASTING!
Okay, time to move on to the weekend’s OTHER big celebrity gathering: the SNL 50th Anniversary Special! The room was wall-to-wall packed with comedy AND music legends, many of whom managed to get in on the fun! Including – in a Q & A segment with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler – Keith Richards, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Ryan Reynolds!
But perhaps the most SURPRISING attendee was eighty-seven-year-old Jack Nicholson! And though it wasn’t the return to acting we long for, he did “perform”, introducing his Anger Management co-star Adam Sandler. Hey, it’s no courtside at a Lakers game, but still no doubt worth leaving his house for!
Also in attendance was Scarlett Johansson, of course – but it’s worth stressing that she was ACTUALLY there, since she’s also been in the news lately as the subject of a deepfake! Specifically, one that purports to show her and other Jewish celebrities clapping back at Kanye’s line of swastika shirts! And she is not happy about it!
She is calling for a crackdown on deepfakes, saying in a statement, “I am a Jewish woman who has no tolerance for antisemitism or hate speech of any kind. But I also firmly believe that the potential for hate speech multiplied by AI is a far greater threat than any one person who takes accountability for it.” Hard to argue with that!
Well, I suppose the fair thing to do now is a story about someone who attended the BAFTAs, so let’s talk about Selena Gomez! She may not have won the Best Supporting Actress award, which instead went to her Emilia Perez co-star Zoe Saldana – but she IS looking pretty hot in a photoshoot for Interview magazine!
She and fiancé Benny Blanco are featured in the mag’s March issue cover story… but if a picture’s worth a thousand words, we’ll focus on the one where she appears to be topless! I know Benny Blanco is a very talented producer – but it’s very hard to look at the caption “You’re stuck with me” and not think, “Yeah, that checks out!”
And last but not least, let’s deal with Drake, who MIGHT be ready to move on from his feud with Kendrick Lamar! That COULD be seen as the takeaway from the just-released track “Gimme A Hug.” Okay, the line “Had the girls up at 29 on stage twerkin’ with a dictionary” does seem to be a shot at the more literary Kendrick. But he later does say “Fuck a rap beef, I’m tryna get the party lit.”
Which is admittedly like throwing a punch and then saying “Okay, NOW the fight’s over” – but honestly, it’s time to put this feud to bed! Even though it DOES have its benefits. Case in point: Drake and PartyNextDoor’s album $ome $exy $ongs 4 U dropped on Valentine’s Day – and quickly became the biggest R&B/soul album in Apple Music history by first-day streams worldwide!
And I think with THAT, we can officially call the Drake-Kendrick Lamar feud, over.
